Deep cleaning your carpets at home doesn’t have to be a daunting task—it's a great way to refresh your living space and tackle built-up dirt, dust, and stains.
With these steps, your carpets will look cleaner, fresher, and more inviting—without the need for expensive professionals!
1. Clear the Area
Start by moving any furniture, rugs, or objects off the carpet. This will give you full access to the area and make the cleaning process much smoother.
2. Vacuum Thoroughly
Before you deep clean, make sure to vacuum the carpet thoroughly. Use slow, deliberate passes to pick up as much dirt, dust, and pet hair as possible. Don’t forget corners and edges—these areas often collect more debris.
3. Treat Stains
For stains, apply a carpet stain remover or make a DIY solution using a mix of warm water and white vinegar (1:1 ratio). Gently blot the stain with a cloth (don’t rub it in), working from the outside in to avoid spreading it further. Let it sit for a few minutes, then blot again with clean water to remove any residue.
4. Use a Carpet Shampooer or Steam Cleaner
If you have a carpet shampooer or steam cleaner, now’s the time to use it! Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, adding the appropriate cleaning solution to the machine. Work in small sections, moving slowly to allow the machine to lift dirt from the fibres. If you don’t have a machine, consider renting one from a local store.
5. Dry the Carpet
Once you’ve finished cleaning, allow your carpet to dry completely. Open windows for ventilation or use fans to speed up the drying process. Avoid walking on the carpet until it’s fully dry to prevent dirt from re-soiling it.
6. Regular Maintenance
To keep your carpets looking fresh, vacuum regularly and spot clean any spills immediately. Deep clean every 6-12 months, depending on foot traffic.
