Clean and reseal your patio or decking this March to protect it from the elements and ensure it's ready for summer.
As the weather begins to warm up, March is an ideal time to clean and reseal your patio or decking to ensure it’s ready for the spring and summer months. These outdoor spaces are often exposed to the elements, and over time, dirt, grime, and weather damage can take their toll. Regular cleaning and resealing will not only maintain the appearance of your patio or decking but also extend its lifespan.
Cleaning Your Patio or Decking
Start by thoroughly cleaning the surface. For patios made of stone or paving, use a pressure washer to remove dirt, moss, and algae. Be mindful of the pressure setting to avoid damaging the stone. For wooden decking, use a deck cleaner or wood cleaner to remove dirt, stains, and mildew. Scrub with a stiff-bristled brush, working along the grain of the wood, and rinse off any remaining residue with a hose.
If your decking has stubborn stains, a solution of water and bleach can be used to tackle mildew and algae, but ensure it’s safe for your specific decking material.
Resealing Your Patio or Decking
Once your patio or decking is clean and dry, it’s time to apply a protective sealer. For wooden decking, a quality wood sealer will help protect against water damage, UV rays, and mould. You can choose between transparent or tinted finishes depending on your aesthetic preferences. Apply the sealer with a brush or roller, working along the grain of the wood, and make sure it’s evenly distributed.
For stone patios, a suitable stone sealer will protect against stains and prevent weed growth between the cracks. Ensure the surface is completely dry before sealing, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the best results.
