Posted on: 10 June 2024

Step into the enchanting world of Michael Rosen at the Heath Robinson Museum in Pinner, where a new exhibition celebrates the life and work of this beloved children's author and the talented illustrators who bring his stories to life. Opening on June 29, "Michael Rosen: The Illustrators" offers a delightful journey through Rosen's career, from the 1970s to the present day.

The exhibition is a visual feast, showcasing original artwork from 14 illustrators, including renowned names like Korky Paul, Quentin Blake, and Tony Ross. Visitors will also enjoy Claire Mackie's whimsical illustrations for Rosen’s "Book of Nonsense" and captivating images from his latest books, illustrated by David Melling and Michael Foreman.

Michael Rosen, born in Harrow in 1946 and raised in Pinner, is not only a celebrated poet and performer but also a passionate advocate for children's literature. As a patron of the Heath Robinson Museum, Rosen emphasises the seamless blend of words and pictures in his books. He believes that children perceive the words and illustrations as a unified whole, each element enriching the other.

The exhibition offers more than just a visual treat. It includes examples of Rosen’s poetry and storytelling, a timeline of his illustrious career, and a reading and learning zone complete with books, colouring pages, and cosy cushions. The gallery’s Activity Studio will host activities and fun facts focused on the process of illustrating written works. Regular storytelling sessions and a special workshop with Michael Rosen himself promise to engage and inspire visitors of all ages.

Assistant curator Hannah Whyte, a lifelong fan of Rosen, is thrilled to share the stories behind the illustrations. She believes the exhibition will captivate audiences, especially children, who will discover the wit and wonder of Rosen’s storytelling and the vibrant illustrations that bring his words to life.

Running until September 22, this exhibition is a must-visit for anyone who cherishes the magic of children's literature.

Whether you're a long-time fan of Michael Rosen or new to his work, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore the creative collaboration between writer and illustrator. Don't miss out on this enchanting experience!
