With hybrid working becoming the norm, having a well-designed home office is essential for productivity, comfort, and well-being.
1. Choose the Right Location
Select a quiet, well-lit area away from household distractions. A spare room is ideal, but if space is limited, use a corner of a living room or bedroom with a screen or bookshelf to create separation.
2. Invest in a Proper Desk and Chair
A sturdy desk at the right height (around 70-75cm) prevents strain. An adjustable ergonomic chair with lumbar support helps maintain good posture. Avoid working from the sofa or bed long-term.
3. Optimise Your Screen Setup
Position your monitor at eye level to avoid neck strain. If using a laptop, invest in a stand and an external keyboard and mouse. Maintain an arm’s length distance from the screen.
4. Ensure Good Lighting
Natural light is best, but if unavailable, use a daylight-style LED lamp to reduce eye strain. Avoid screen glare by positioning lighting to the side rather than directly behind or in front of your monitor.
5. Maintain Good Posture
Keep your feet flat on the floor, knees at a 90-degree angle, and shoulders relaxed. Use a footrest if necessary. Sit back in your chair rather than hunching forward.
6. Manage Cables & Clutter
Use cable tidies or trunking to keep wires organised. A tidy workspace reduces stress and improves focus.
7. Take Breaks & Move Regularly
Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Stand up and stretch regularly to prevent stiffness.
